About My Photographs

I got my first 35mm camera in 1972 and have been shooting every since.  Originally I shot only color film whether print or slide film. In the mid 90’s I was looking for a new photography challenge and started shooting black and white film. Today I use a variety of 35mm film cameras, a couple of old Kodak Brownie cameras for 120 film, a 4×5 view camera, a Yashica 6x6 120 film camera and  3 digital cameras for my photography.  The majority of my art photographs are taken with the 35 mm cameras, the Yashica or the 4×5 view camera when time and opportunities allows.  The Brownies are just for fun.

I use 2 types of black & white film, one is the standard film people are familiar with and the other is black & white infrared film.  The black & white infrared film records or sees light at a different wavelength than standard black & white film.  These photographs are easily recognizable by the whitish glow you see around vegetation.  It is very unique and for me a bit of a challenge to get just right.

All of my black and white photographs are printed in my traditional wet darkroom.  I print on a variety of resin coated and fiber papers as well as use different developers.  A variety of toners are also used to attain different moods.  They may be toned with selenium, sepia, blue, copper or gold or a combination of those toners.  Some photographs have selective toning to enhance certain characteristic of the photograph.  I print primarily on 11×14 and 16×20 papers and matted accordingly.  I can make prints as large as 30×40.

I have  added color photography to my art shows as well as my web page.  My passion is black and white but I have 1000’s of color photographs I would like to share.  I will post them as time allows.

Looking for a new photography challenge I started working with high speed photography.  The focus has been on water droplet collisions.  That has been fun to work with. Your imagination is the only limiting factor. And it is truly trial and error. Continuing to expanding my photography adventures I have started shooting astrophotography. A whole new set of parameters, software and challenges to over come, but the end result is well worth it.

Traveling

We traveled what we considered extensively the 20 years. Get on a plane rent a car for 2 weeks and make a big loop. We did a lot of planning and used our time efficiently. We would generally stay 2-4 days in most destinations and places like Yellowstone we threw in a couple of extra days. We spend about 3 years researching RVs and finely bought one a couple of year ago. We have begun to travel more and for longer periods of time. We bought a travel trailer which allow us this opportunity and also allows us to wake up where we want to explore. The benefits are numerous and the downfalls are few.
